About the Mission:

The family of Captain John R. Kasmer has requested Patriot Guard Riders participation in honoring his life and military service. Captain Kasmer of Williamsville, NY passed away on 8 January 2024 at the age of 94.

Captain Kasmer was a veteran of the Korean War, Cold War and Vietnam War Era.  He entered the US Army in June of 1948 and after basic training, was selected to attend Officer Candidate School at Fort Dix. He served in the Korean War as an Infantry Officer with the 101st Airborne Division, and upon returning stateside, was selected to serve as a member of the “Old Guard” for 4 years at Arlington National Cemetery. He would then go on to become an inspector at Fort Bragg North Carolina for the remainder of his career in the Army.   He later served in the US Air Force Reserve for a short time before finally retiring from military service. Upon his retirement in 1972, John worked as a mechanic for General Motors until his retirement in 1996.

During his military career, Captain Kasmer earned the following awards: Bronze Star Medal; Army Commendation Medal w/3 Service Stars (4 Awards); Army Good Conduct Medal; Air Force Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal w/1 Service Star (2 Awards); Korean Service Medal w/2 Service Stars (3 Awards); Korea Defense Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Combat Infantryman Badge; Army Master Parachutist Badge; United Nations Korea Service Medal; Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon; Republic of Korea Korean War Service Medal; and NYS Conspicuous Service Cross Award.

Special Covid-19 Mission Guidelines:

Based on the most current COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines: Protect Yourself and Your Family from COVID-19, and CDC Guidelines of 3 March 2022, going forward, the Lead Ride Captain for any mission will be responsible for determining whether PGR members will have to mask up or not. Please ensure that you have a mask with you, should the need arise, and respect the LRC’s decision in these matters.


Special Information:

PGR will provide a respectful flag line for arrival of the family and guests. The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 AM, followed by the dignified transfer and escort to Mount Calvary Cemetery, 800 Pine Ridge Heritage Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14225 for interment with military honors.

Please be prepared with a clean 3x5 American, US Army or US Air Force flag, dress for the weather, and ensure your large flags are securely attached.
