About the Mission:

The family of Sergeant Major (SGM), Retired, Dickie N. McDermott has invited Patriot Guard Riders to participate in honoring his service and celebrating his life. SGM McDermott passed on 15 November 2025 at the age of 73.

SGM McDermott served in the US Army for ten years and two months, of which two years and eight months were foreign duty in Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG, E-6) with an MOS of 11B-3Y, Infantryman. Upon discharge from the US Army, SGM McDermott continued his service in the US Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major (SGM) and retiring after 22 years of total service. SGM McDermott was awarded: Purple Heart Medal, US Army Commendation Medal, US Army Achievement Medal, US Army Good Conduct Medal w/ Bronze Clasp w/ three loops (three awards), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 2 Bronze Service Stars (two campaigns), US Army Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/1960 Device, Expert Infantry Badge, Expert Qualification Badge (M-16) and Parachutist Badge.

Special Information:

PGR Members will form a flag line at 12:15pm in anticipation of the family's arrival at 12:30pm. We will hold the flag line for calling hours (1:00pm - 4:00pm). About 3:55 pm, we will go inside and perform a final salute as a group. Following the group salute, the mission will be complete. There is no escort or cemetery included in this Honor Mission. SGM McDermott will be interred at Bath National Cemetery in the Spring.

Please come with clean 3x5 US or US Army flag; dress for the weather, bring your own water. Thank you for taking time to honor the life and service of US Army veteran, Sergeant Major Dickie McDermott and to support his loving family.
